Local SEO for Small Businesses in Greater Manchester: A Practical Checklist

If customers find you by searching for what you do plus a place — “electrician in Sale”, “laser hair removal near Swinton”, “web designer Altrincham” — local SEO is how you show up. It isn't mysterious, and most of it comes down to doing a short list of things properly and consistently. Here's the checklist we work through with local businesses across Greater Manchester.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important local listing. Choose the most accurate primary category, add every service, write a clear description, upload real photos and keep opening hours up to date. If you travel to customers rather than serving from a shopfront, set your service area instead of publishing a home address.

2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should read the same on your website, Google profile and every directory. Small differences, such as “Road” versus “Rd”, aren't a disaster, but conflicting addresses or old phone numbers are worth fixing.

3. Say where you work on your website

Put your town and area in your page titles, headings and opening copy where it is natural, and have a page that clearly explains the areas you serve. Avoid creating dozens of near-identical “service in [town]” pages, which add nothing for readers and can hurt rather than help. One strong page beats twenty thin ones. You can see how we approach it on our web design in Altrincham and Manchester page.

4. Earn reviews steadily

Recent, genuine reviews influence both rankings and whether someone picks you. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review. Our guides to automation for salons and clinics and automation for tradespeople show how to make the ask automatic.

5. Add local structured data

LocalBusiness structured data on your site helps search engines understand who you are, where you are and what you do. It needs to match what is visible on the page and on your profile.

6. Build a few genuinely local links and mentions

Local organisations — Chambers of commerce, business networks and trade bodies often list members with a link.

Sponsorship and community — A local team, event or charity you genuinely support is a natural source of mentions.

Local press and blogs — A short case study of a real local project can earn coverage and links.

7. Make the website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data. A slow site loses both visitors and rankings. Fast loading, readable text and a tap-to-call button matter more than clever design.

8. Measure what's working

Connect Google Search Console and check which searches bring people to you, which pages get impressions, and which pages aren't being indexed. Review it monthly and adjust.
