Shopify vs a Custom-Built Website: Which Is Right for Your UK Business?

We build custom websites, so you might expect us to tell you custom is always better. It isn't. For plenty of UK small businesses a hosted platform like Shopify is the right call, and pretending otherwise would waste your money. The real question is where each option stops fitting your business.

When Shopify is the better choice

You sell products in a conventional way — Catalogue, basket, checkout, shipping. If that describes your business, a platform has already solved the hard parts.

You need to launch quickly on a modest budget — A well-configured template store can be live in weeks and costs far less upfront than a bespoke build.

You'd rather not own maintenance — Hosting, security patches and payment compliance are handled for you.

When a custom build earns its cost

Your process doesn't fit the shop template — Quote-based pricing, bookings, memberships, made-to-order products or B2B account rules usually mean bending a platform with paid apps until it breaks.

Monthly costs are creeping up — Platform subscription, app subscriptions and transaction fees compound. Over several years a one-off build can cost less than the sum of the add-ons.

You want to own the system — With a custom build the code, data and roadmap are yours. You aren't exposed to a platform changing its pricing or features.

You need deep integration — Connecting orders to your own stock, accounts or booking tools is straightforward when the site is built around them.

A quick way to decide

Write down how an order, enquiry or booking actually moves through your business, step by step. If a platform can handle every step without workarounds, use the platform. If you find yourself listing three or four paid apps to cover gaps, or manual steps someone does after every order, that is the signal that custom — or custom automation on top of a platform — is worth pricing.
There's also a middle path: keep the platform for the storefront and build the missing pieces — a custom booking flow, automated order handling, a dashboard — around it. Our business automation work often starts exactly there.

What it costs either way

Our e-commerce cost guide has indicative UK price ranges for template-based, customised and fully custom stores. If you want a recommendation for your own business rather than a general rule, tell us about your project and we'll give you an honest answer — including when that answer is “use Shopify”.
